Aid Workers, Peace Keepers Accused of Child Abuse

The U.N. Department for Peacekeeping Operations was named as the most responsible for such abuse. The charity said they have 15 allegations against its staff and partners in 2007.

Aid workers and peace keepers accuse of child abuse in conflict zones, charges a report released Tuesday by Save the Children, a British charity.

The report said that children as young as six accused aid workers of soliciting sexual favors for basic things like food, money, soap and luxury items like cellphones.

The scandalous study is based on findings from work with hundreds of children from conflict zones like the Africa's Ivory Coast, southern Sudan and Haiti.

The report also said that in most cases the abuse was not reported due to a number of factors, most important among them being fear. People fear that if they report the abuser, the aid might be withdrawn.

The U.N. Department for Peacekeeping Operations was named as the most responsible for such abuse. The charity said they have 15 allegations against its staff and partners in 2007.

UNPKO spokesman Nick Birnback, however, rejected the allegations.

The report advocates that aid agencies should counsel and encourage children to report such abuses.
