EU Countries Allow CIA Torture Flights

European Union lawmakers slam countries allowing rendition US flights transporting prisoners for torture.

The European Union parliament has condemned member countries that turn a "blind eye" to U.S. flights transporting terror suspects to torture camps.

According a report, so-called rendition flights by the CIA, which the European Parliament branded "an illegal instrument used by the US in the fight against terrorism", transport alleged terrorists to countries not bound by any human rights code for interrogation.

The report, based on follows a year-long inquiry, said more than 1,000 secret CIA flights have flown into European airspace or landed at European airports since the 9/11 terror attacks.

London Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford several EU governments either colluded actively with the CIA's rendition operations, or simply "turned a blind eye" to them.

UK was blamed for colluding with the CIA in the transport of prisoners. Also, many European governments accepted and concealed the practice. Germany and Ireland were named as being most likely to allow rendition flights to use their airports or airspace. Ireland is accused to allow 147 of these flights to stop at its airports unchecked.

The report also said the CIA secretly held terror suspects illegally in the EU before flying to States that practise torture, Irish Examiner says.

Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern today said that 60-year-old Chicago Convention, which allows transit flights through Europe without any information on passengers, crew or cargo, should be reviewed.
