Hezbollah Gets Weapons from Syria

Lebanon regularly reports arms being smuggling into the country from Syria, US envoy claims.

Hezbollah was continuing to acquire arms, US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton said Monday,

According to Bolton, the UN had information that Hezbollah, Islamist militant and political organization based in Lebanon, was still receiving weapons shipments from Syria.

Lebanese officials were hesitant to confirm the arms smuggling report, for fear of retaliation from Syria, Reuters quotes the top US official.

Syria acknowledges there might be smuggling but insists the border is very difficult to control, said Terje Roed-Larsen, the top U.N. diplomat on Lebanese ties with Syria.

UN Security Council resolutions in 2005 and 2006 imposed an arms embargo on Lebanon and called on it to disarm all militias on its soil, including Hezbollah.

In September 2006, Amnesty International released a report accusing Hezbollah of war crimes during the 2006 conflict with Israel.

According to a poll of Lebanese adults taken in 2004, only 6% of respondents think that Hezbollah should be disarmed, while 41% support Hezbollah.
