Crashed Airplane Found in Amazon Jungle; No Survivors

Rescue planes found the wreckage of a Brazilian passenger jet today.

A Gol airlines Boeing-737 jet with 155 people onboard has crashed deep in the Amazon jungle. Chances to find survivors are "practically nonexistent," authorities said.

Flight 1907 suffered an accident this Friday, approximately 30 kilometers from the township of Peixoto Azevedo, in the State of Mato Grosso. The aircraft had taken off from Manaus on a flight via Brasilia to Rio de Janeiro.

The 155 people were on board of a brand-new Boeing 737-800 operated by Brazilian low-cost carrier Gol that crushed over the Amazon jungle, Brazil's airport authority said.

Authorities lost radar contact with the plane during its flight from the principal Amazon city of Manaus to the national capital, Brasilia, the airline said.

"The plane was found. The wreckage was found," Jose Carlos Pereira, president of the airport authority Infraero, told reporters.

The small size of the wreckage area indicated that it's unlikely anyone survived amond among the passengers and six crew members on board.

The jungle where the plane crashed is so dense that authorities were planning to descend rescue crews by rope from helicopters.

Authorities suspect that a plane crushed after colliding mid-air with a smaller plane. The pilot of the small plane said to have been involved in the collision, managed to land his craft. He is being questioned by police.
