Toronto Gets 11,000 New Transit Cameras

Tapes will be deleted after three days, unless needed for criminal investigation.

The Toronto Transit System (TTC) will receive nearly 11 thousand new surveillance video cameras.

Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian issued her decision as a result of a complaint by Privacy International, a personal advocacy group that has opposed the camera installation.

The $21 million dollar camera expansion in the transit system is an effort to give the transit authority new abilities to safeguard the transit riders.

It is hoped that the new cameras will help eliminate crime on the systems subways, buses and trolleys.

There will be a new camera on every bus, subway car, and streetcar in the system, as well as cameras near entrances and on every platform.

The Toronto Transit Authority must take a number of steps to make sure that the privacy of the individual and the public at large is maintained.

In addition, the system needs to be audited regularly to make sure that the privacy of users is being maintained.
