A Toronto businessman falsified his accounting records to mislead the Ministry of Revenue about the amount of sales tax collected from customers.
On September 7, 2007, Shazam Ali, operator of Toronto computer businesses Shazam! Technology and Shazam! Technologies, was sentenced for wilfully evading compliance with the Retail Sales Tax Act. Ali failed to report and pay $19,124.46 in sales tax collected between 2001 and 2006.
Ali was fined $8,500 and must pay a surcharge of $2,125 to the Victims' Justice Fund.
