Every Third Lipstick Is Contaminated with Lead

The suspect lipstick revealed concentrations of the heavy metal exceeding 0.1 parts per million which is the FDA's safe limit for lead in candy.

A warning was issued by The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics citing a study by an independent lab which found that 33% of all lipstick contained possible dangerous levels of lead.

The suspect lipstick revealed concentrations of the heavy metal exceeding 0.1 parts per million which is the FDA's safe limit for lead in food. That is the closest thing the findings could be compared to since the FDA does not set guidelines for lead in lipstick.

A spokesperson for the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association - the self-governing organ of cosmetic industry - took a different view and responded by saying, "The average amount of lead a woman would be exposed to when using cosmetics is 1,000 times less than the amount she would get from eating, breathing, and drinking water that meets Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standards.”

The FDA is now investigating the matter.

According to statistcs, more than 750 personal care products sold in the U.S. violate industry safety standards or cosmetic safety standards in other developed countries.
