Kama Kazi: The Divine Wind on Queen WestKama kazi, lifestyle one-stop shopping destinations, injects a heavy dose of sophistication in Queen West in Toronto.WHAT IT IS: Kama Kazi, a spacious boutique located in the heart of Queen West, where adventurous Torontonians can find more whimsical objects and exclusive designer labels. Kama Kazi means “divine wind” in Japanese. THE CREATORS: Owners Debra Antwi and her partner Fren Antwi, former stylists to stars, aimed to create a one-stop lifestyle boutique showcasing unique designer labels and inspired modern objects, which is clearly a sophisticated break from the usual cheap chic fashion found in the area. The store interior has been designed by Johnson Chou, the creative mind behind Blowfish restaurant and MOCCA boutique. The tranquil, mostly white interior reminds 1960s space movies, with items hanging on invisible steel strings and curved ribbon-like walls that remind “wind blowing into the store,” says Chou. WHAT'S IN STORE: The welcome pop of sleek jet-setting style in otherwise too-eclectic neighbourhood, Kama Kazi features the well-concocted blend of U.K. and European designer labels such as Oswald Boateng, the man behind those impeccable coats in Matrix movies, Y-3 by Yohji Yamamoto, Christian Lacroix, Oliver Strelli, Cop Copine, Braddock's and CP Company. Kama Kazi also features store's own brand kobe kama kazi designed by Fred Antwi himself. Among the whimsical design objects we adored the quirky Luxury Ducks collection and Suck UK pop-culture inspired gifts. WHAT’S FOR KIDS: Kama Kazi Kids feature a fine selection of European baby wear and kid’s fashions, including organic cotton for Belgium, designer girl’s fashions by Minisu, shearling coats by Terra Misu, and luxurious baby items from Les Triples and Microbe. In spring 2007, the collection will also include maternity wear by Habitual and yoga wear by Karma. WHERE TO FIND: The flagship Kama Kazi store, 781 Queen St West; Kama Kazi Kids, 744 Queen St West.
