Joe Torre, five days after his managing the Yankees, told Bob Costas on HBO last night that the team’s principal owner, George Steinbrenner, held him to a high standard of winning that is impossible.

“Every year, it was disappointment, disappointment, disappointment,” Torre detailed in his taped interview for “Real Sports” during which he recounted what happened during his meeting last week in Tampa, Florida.

“I just didn’t think that was the right thing,” Torre said, according to part of a transcript provided by HBO. “And I just let them know how I felt. But when I was speaking, it was, there was nothing coming back, and it was a little eerie for me.”
