Sharapova Lost DFS Title to Yankovic

Maria Sharapova lost the grass-court DFS Classic title to Jelena Jankovic, #2 seeded player.

Maria Sharapova, world No.2 womens tennis player, lost in final at the DFS Classic in Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham, England, to No.2 seed Jelena Jankovic (4-6, 6-3, 7-5).

Jankovic claimed her fourth Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title this season and her first title on grass, winning her service game to 15 and raising her hands to the sky in victory after one hour and 55 minutes of play.

"I'm not disappointed," Sharapova said. "There's only good things I can take from this. I feel a far better grass-court player now then when I played my first match."

Jankovic, who now heads to the Netherlands, was happy to have reversed the final result from Birmingham in 2005 that saw Sharapova beat her in the final in another tough three-setter.

"I was losing the whole time in the match,” said the Serb star. “This result gives me a lot of confidence. Beating Sharapova on this surface is a good result… luckily I gave her revenge for the time when she beat me so it’s a good feeling for sure and going into Wimbledon with a title under my belt is great."
