Alpine Skiing in Danger Thanks to Global Warming

Skiing crisis in Europe is blamed on snow shortage, warm weather.

French and Swiss World Cup races were canceled due to a lack of snow, blaming unusually warm weather and the lack of snow.

Warm weather forced the cancellation of the December 9 and 10 races in in the French Alps of Val d'Isere for men and in the Swiss resort of St Moritz for women.

Further events ahead of the Christmas are also risk cancelling if the weather in Alps doesn't change.

However, skiing races will not be transferred to North America, the International Skiing Federation (FIS) said on Thursday. Even though the skiing conditions in Beaver Creek were found "more-than-excellent", the FIS chief race director Guenter Hujara said there would be additional costs required that might not be covered by sponsors.

"We have tried to put something together to present the World Cup to the world but there is not enough money. It was not possible to find sponsors," Hujara said.

"None of the canceled ladies or men's alpine FIS World Cup events will be moved to North America," the FIS said in a statement.

Val d'Isere is the third World Cup venue where skiing events have been canceled this season because of unusually warm weather. Heavy rain and warm temperatures last month prompted to cancel skiing competitions in Austria and Switzerland.
