Anti-Clinton Ad Linked to Obama Camp

A video that compares Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to Big Brother has been created by Internet consultant who worked for Barack Obama.

The creator of a YouTube Orwell-inspired video against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton worked for a digital consulting firm with ties to rival Sen. Barack Obama.

Internet strategist whose company advised Sen. Barack Obama on his Internet presence, claimed credit for creating and posting a video on the Internet.

Philip de Vellis, 33, who has worked on numerous electoral campaigns, said he created the video that slammed Obama's main rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and posted it on YouTube.

"I did it. And I'm proud of it," De Vellis wrote on Huffington Post, "There are thousands of other people who could have made this ad, and I guarantee that more ads like it — by people of all political persuasions — will follow... This shows that the future of American politics rests in the hands of ordinary citizens."

The creator identified himself on YouTube as ParkRidge47, a reference to Clinton's year of birth and the place in suburban Chicago where she was raised.

De Vellis, 33, was said to be "terminated" by Blue State Digital, a Washington firm that advises the Illinois Democrat on his Internet presence. De Vellis, however, said he resigned.

"Mr. De Vellis created this video on his own time. It was done without the knowledge of management, and was in no way tied to his work at the firm or our formal engagement [on technology pursuits] with the Obama campaign," the company statement said.

Blue State Digital assured the campaign that De Vellis "did no work on our campaign's account."

DeVellis confirmed that he produced the ad outside of work and that neither Blue State nor the Obama campaign was aware of his role in the ad.

Blue State designed Obama's Web site, and one of the firm's founding members, Joe Rospars, took a leave to work as Obama's director of new media.

Obama's camp repeatedly denied of any involvement in the matter. Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in an e-mail that Obama's campaign and its employees "had no knowledge and had nothing to do with the creation of the ad."

"Hillary 1984" video that compares Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to Big Brother has been viewed by over a million visitors of YouTube.

The ad that "promises to break the spell of the mind-numbing sayings of Hillary Clinton" portrays Clinton on a huge television screen addressing robotic humans in a stark, futuristic hall. A female athlete tosses a hammer at the screen, destroying Clinton's image with an explosive flash. Then this text: "On January 14th the Democratic primary will begin. And you will see why 2008 isn't going to be like '1984.'"

You can see the video here.

The 74-second clip, a copy of a 1984 Apple ad for its Macintosh computer, closes with a final image reading "BarackObama.com."
