Public Alert: Fake Diabetic Blood Test Strips

Counterfeit test strips potentially could give incorrect blood glucose values which is dangerous.

Diabetes sufferers are warned not to use fake blood glucose test strips, FDA said in a statement.

Fake blood glucose test strips are being sold in the United States are intended for use with various models of LifeScan's OneTouch® Brand Blood Glucose Monitors

These monitors are used by people with diabetes to measure their blood glucose.

In a statement, FDA said that the counterfeit test strips potentially could give incorrect blood glucose values - either too high or too low.
Wrong glucose test results may prompt a patient to take either too much or too little insulin.

Insulin treatment based on inaccurate blood glucose results can lead to serious injury or death.

Consumers who had the fake diabetes test strips should stop using them, replace them immediately and contact their physician, FDA said.

No injuries had been reported to FDA to date, the agency said.

FDA officials are still investigating the matter.
