Yesterday, a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of "cuts and gravy" meals was announced by Canadian pet food maker Menu Foods. Ontario-based Menu Foods Income Fund manufactures wet pet food for such popular brands as Eucanuba, Iams and Hill's. The company said it makes pet food for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. FDA official said that one in six animals died in tests of suspect dog and cat food by the manufacturer last month when Menu Foods received complaints from consumers. "We anticipate those numbers will increase as the investigation continues," said Stephen F. Sundlof, the director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. Following news of the recall of 88 brands of pet foods (full list available here), complaints from owners of sick and deceased pets are coming in hundreds to state FDA offices, veterinarians, pet food companies and media outlets reporting on the incident. One of Toronto Daily News employees confirmed that her dog was feeling sick and vomited recently after eating "cuts-and-gravy" dog food made by Iams. Dog's condition improved after the owner stopped feeding the dog this particular type of food. So far, the source of the contamination was traced to wheat gluten, which the manufacturer said had been coming from a new supplier. Neither the FDA nor Menu Foods would identify the supplier or that company's other customers, FDA said that this supplier does not provide ingredients for makers of human food. Other News
